Paul calls the Gentile believers to remember their former condition: without Christ, alienated from the people of God, strangers to the covenants, having no hope, and without God in the world. Then comes the great reversal. In Christ Jesus those who were far off have been brought near by His blood. Christ Himself is our peace. He broke down the dividing wall of hostility, abolished the enmity in His flesh, and created in Himself one new man from the two, reconciling both groups to God and to one another through the cross.

Through Christ, both Jew and Gentile now have equal access in one Spirit to the Father. We are no longer strangers and sojourners, but fellow citizens with the saints, members of God’s household, and being built together into a holy sanctuary where God dwells by His Spirit.
