Paul applies the Spirit-filled life to the household, beginning with marriage. Wives are to be subject to their own husbands as to the Lord, for the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church. This submission is not universal to all men, nor is it independent of Christ; it is rooted in worship of the Lord and does not follow a husband into sin. Husbands are commanded to love their wives just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her, nourishing and cherishing her as their own bodies. The two become one flesh, a reality rooted in creation and pointing to a great mystery: Christ and the church. Each husband is to love his own wife as himself, and each wife is to respect her husband, so that the household itself becomes a living picture of the gospel.
