God reaffirms the promise of a son to Sarah, gently rebuking her unbelieving laughter while displaying His omniscience. The chapter then reveals the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah’s great wickedness, echoing Romans 1’s progression from suppressing truth to utter depravity. Abraham intercedes for the city, discovering God’s profound mercy: He will spare the wicked for the sake of the righteous, even if only ten are found.

This foreshadows the final judgment of the world, yet grace holds back wrath while God gathers His elect. Abraham is not the hero here; he shadows Christ interceding for sinners. We are Lot: righteous by grace alone, distressed by surrounding sin, and rescued from coming judgment through Christ’s mediation. A sobering call to cling to the Gospel amid a world under delayed judgment, recognizing that temporal grace spares the wicked for the sake of the elect, and ultimate salvation rests in Christ alone.
